LONDON (MarketWatch) -- U.K. advertising and marketing group WPP (UK:WPP 650.50, -20.50, -3.06%) said Tuesday that its first-half net profit rose 39% to 150.8 million pounds ($234.2 million) as revenue grew 3.5% to 4.44 billion pounds. Cost controls at the firm resulted in a slight decrease in operating costs and helped boost operating profit 71% to 340.2 million pounds. The firm reported revenue growth in the U.K. and North America, but revenue was down slightly in Western Continental Europe. By division, the strongest business was its branding and identity unit, where profit before interest and taxes rose 75% to 104.4 million pounds.
