Love is new for 'golden age' kids
MOST people don't need a game show to find love. While college celebrities Ma Yimi and Xie Jia bounce between potential boyfriends on Jiangsu TV's You are the One, many university students have already found their match.
Campus life provides young Chinese a window to explore their own independence. Many start dating for the first time, looking for love and learning life lessons.
"In high school, teachers and parents want students to bury their heads in textbooks to prepare for exams," said Sun Yunxiao, the deputy director of the China Youth and Children Research Center. "They believe only higher education brings a bright future."
But once in those college classrooms, students are eager to explore the idea of companionship.
Fan Xueju met her boyfriend, Liu Shuoyong, in class. The two 21-year-old juniors at Beijing Foreign Studies University share the same major, the same classes, and the same interests. After spending two years together, they are now inseparable.
"We have grown a deep attachment to each other," said Fan, who decided she wanted to marry Liu almost immediately after they started dating. "We are two perfectly-matching pieces of a puzzle."
Unlike student relationships in many Western countries, Chinese relationships tend to be long-term and serious. Over one-third of all college students are in a relationship, according to an October 2009 survey of students at 12 universities published by Jiefang Daily. And 40 percent of the respondents were positive they would start a family with their current partner.
But while couples are quick to talk marriage, they tend to be hush-hush when it comes to the intimate intangibles of dating. When asked about dating multiple people at once or being sexually active, students answer with shock or ambivalence.
According to the Jiefang Daily survey, 47 percent of students had an ambiguous attitude toward premarital sex. The remaining half was split between supporting and opposing the idea.
"In university, you just pay attention to your feelings - whether you love your girlfriend or not," said Zhang Yi, a 23-year-old senior statistics major at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics who hopes to marry his current girlfriend. "After graduation, you have to consider other factors - her job, income, family and educational background. It makes things complicated."
That's when the window of opportunity slams shut for most college romances: graduation.
"If students want to maintain a relationship after graduation, they must make sure that they share the same philosophy and values, and that they have the same aims in life," said Xu Anqi, a marriage expert at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
These relationships only occasionally end in "I do". In a 2008 survey of 7,000 young employees by the job-hunting website Zhaopin.com, 17 percent of couples married directly after graduation. Among them, 48.4 percent said it was the right choice.
So these campus romances might not last forever, but students do take away valuable life lessons.
"Nearly every college student grew up as an only child, and it's easy for them to be selfish and wayward," Sun said. "Students learn how to take care of others and become tolerant in a relationship."

My family's meal ticket has dried up
The morning was a bit cold, but Li Yanbo quickly got out of his warm bed when his cellphone alarm rang at 7:30. He picked up two plastic buckets and rushed to the center of the village, where a fire engine arrives once a day to provide water for residents.
Li, a 24-year-old farmer, lives in Liguan village, Songming county – about 60km away from Kunming. For the last three months, he has risen early to meet the fire truck because the village’s only reservoir has dried up. Rain hasn’t fallen for six months.
The queue is extremely long by the time Li arrives. About 4,000 thirsty villagers, representing some 600 households, come with their empty buckets and stand behind the truck.
“My family gets two or three buckets of water every day. We use them for drinking, washing and cooking,” said Li. “If we save a little every day, then once a week we can have a brief shower.”
Li planted two mu of broad beans last autumn, but he has seen no yield because of the drought. During a normal season, he would plant rice after harvesting the beans. But the field is so dry that he can’t even plough it.
“The rice is food for my family – my parents and younger brother. We have no budget to buy rice from the market,” said Li.
Like most people in his village, growing tobacco provides the family’s meal ticket. Normally, Li’s three mu of tobacco earns him near 10,000 yuan. But now, with no water for seeding, their only source of income has dried up.
Local governments are trying to help families like Li’s by hunting for new water resources. The Ministry of Land and Resources announced last week that 1,100 new wells would be dug in 10 counties, including Li’s, by the end of May. But Li is not very optimistic.
“My neighbor has a well. In the past, it was full and you could get water without using a rope, but now it is empty,” said Li. “So even if you dig a new well in some other place, the result will likely be the same.”
In Li’s opinion, there are more sustainable ways to prevent a drought, such as planting more trees.
33%。 Trees conserve water with their large roots. But in Yunnan, forest coverage has decreased from 63 percent to 33 percent over the last 18 years.
“When I was a child, my father would take me up the mountain and tell me how he used to cut down trees and use them as firewood when he was young,” said Li. “Now the land around the reservoir is barren – there are no trees protecting the underground water supply.”
Li says the drought has served as a reality check on the importance of water conservation.
“It has taught me that, if we use water efficiently, two buckets a day should be enough for four family members. We can recycle the water for multiple uses,” said Li. “Every drop of water is precious. I hope people realize this.”

Perfect partnership formula
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp look alike. They sport equally wacky hair and tinted glasses, and stroke their artsy goatees as they talk. They cite similar artistic influences, mention their deep friendship (Depp is godfather to Burton’s first son) and even finish each other’s sentences. It’s no wonder the two have turned into Hollywood’s most prolific director-actor partnership. The release of Alice in Wonderland in China this week, where Depp plays the crazy Mad Hatter, marks their seventh collaboration. Director-actor partnerships seem to be as old as Hollywood. Sometimes directors are inspired by actors (Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman). Other times actors place complete trust in directors (Leo Di Caprio and Martin Scorsese). But in the case of look-a-likes Burton and Depp, their creative partnership is based on absurdity, trust, and a common love of dark, twisted storytelling. When they first met, Depp was on his way to becoming a teen idol. Burton challenged Depp, casting him as Edward in Edward Scissorhands (1990): a twisted fairytale about a boy with hands made out of scissors who yearns to find love. Depp’s faultless performance as a freak in suburbia made the film a modern classic. It also created the bonds of the Burton-Depp team. “When we first met, we connected on all these super absurd levels,” says Depp in Esquire. Now with a trusted partner, Burton went on to cast Depp in six more absurd roles. He played a legendary bad film director (Ed Wood, 1994), an investigator of decapitations (Sleepy Hollow, 1999), a man who accidentally marries a corpse (Corpse Bride, 2005), a crackpot chocolate maker (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 2005) and a murderous hairdresser (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, 2007). So, when Burton signed on to make Alice in Wonderland, there was little doubt he would take Depp down the rabbit hole. Burton and Depp, in their unique style, re-imagined Wonderland as Underland–a creepy, colorful, jungle of wonder. They transformed the legendary Hatter into a gangly, circus clown, a man driven crazy by poison, who speaks in riddles and giggles like a school girl. Again the Burton-Depp combo–Depp’s performance in Burton’s fairytale–has proved a huge success. Alice in Wonderland arrives in China after topping global box offices three weeks in a row. If their partnership is anything to go by, more directors should stick with a formula once perfected. obo [2] Getting paid to go online
COLLEGE students might get depressed reading the work experience requirements of job ads. But don't despair. Compared with older workers, students do have an edge in some careers, especially in the Internet-related areas. This week, 21st Century lists several of these professions to keep in mind before and after graduation. The boom in social networking services (SNS) has meant more young people playing social games. They're not just fun, they're a good job opportunity. For example, the popular Renren.com game "Happy Farm" was developed by a group of post-80s youngsters, including COO (chief operating officer) Xu Cheng. "Young people, including university students, have advantages in the gaming industry, especially in developing mini social games mainly based on Flash technology," explains Li Xu, the website's social game development manager. "They understand the technology more easily than those who're older." In the Web 2.0 age, traditional media like newspaper, radio and TV have established websites to communicate online with readers. The job of forum manager is another new career opportunity for young people. Most college students are already familiar with their campus BBS (bulletin board system), Baidu post bar and other kinds of online forums. Some are active members, or even moderators. Crafting eye-catching headlines requires witty wording skills and a good sense of slang. Young people are often more qualified than senior news reporters and editors that may not be proficient in online skills. Can you imagine working in your pajamas? You can forget those dull meetings with clients and business talks. All you need do is comment on a hotel and share pictures and videos on your blog. It's true. Travel search engine Qunar.com recently posted a job announcement for a "hotel-sleeper", with a monthly salary of 10,000 yuan. "College students from all majors are welcome. We think they all have the qualities for the job," says Zhang Ze, vice president for Qunar. "Traveling around and living in hotels means you need plenty of energy and enthusiasm, and young grads always have the passion to travel," says Zhang. "Students have the curiosity to explore strange places and their special angle can find ways to have fun that aren't found in travel guides." To describe the experience, you need to write well. "Many grads have blogs where they share their experiences, so writing with humor and ease, and adding some pictures and interesting videos might not be so hard for them," Zhang observes. This job is just like its name implies: gathering the experiences of users and potential users, and helping improve products to ensure that they're easy and pleasurable to use. For example, MSN has user experience specialists who help improve its popular messenger's functions. This might be a great place for grads, said Luo Wei, a user experience specialist at 55bbs.com, a Beijing-based website with information on shopping, food, and travel. The website has part-time and full-time positions in the user experience field for grads. "For example, when people browse through a long post on our forum, they can be interrupted by numerous comments, which is very annoying," Luo says. "User experience specialists find this and report it to our technical team, who can add a 'see author only' button to a post. A lot of users say this makes surfing our website much more convenient." "Students have a lot of Internet experience," he says. "They know the users' habits so well that they can spot mistakes, malfunctions and bad online product designs." obo

Illegal oil a 'hot' business
With the inefficiency of current techniques for detecting and identifying the use of illegal cooking oil in China, there is an urgent need to improve kitchen waste recycling procedures to prevent the continued use of such oil in food production, a leading food expert has said. He Dongping, a professor of food science engineering at Wuhan Polytechnic University (WHPU), revealed last Thursday that one in every 10 meals in the country might have been cooked with dirty oil based on an ongoing study. The revelation has raised widespread alarm. The State Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued an emergency notice to restaurants nationwide, warning them against recycling oil. The "illegal cooking oil" is usually made from discarded kitchen waste that has been refined. Although it looks clean and clear, it actually contains toxic substances, including "aflatoxin", which can cause cancer. "The country's underground oil refining businesses have grown pretty mature. There is a whole set of procedures for producing illegal cooking oil," He explained. In the current situation, preventing of the use of illegal cooking oil should start at its source, kitchen waste, He said. "The first step is to ensure an official, standardized collection of kitchen waste," he recommended. In the interim, the use of illegal cooking oil continues to be sustained by its high profitability. An investigation in Wuhan showed few restaurants are willing to hire the city's sanitation workers for kitchen waste collection. The owner of a restaurant in the Wuchang district of Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, last Friday told China Daily he serves at least 50 tables a day, which produces two big barrels of kitchen waste. According to the restaurateur, the waste could be collected and recycled by sanitation workers, but an official with the Wuhan urban management bureau told China Daily that sanitation workers never collect waste from restaurants. "The restaurants have to pay a certain fee if they hire the city's sanitation workers, whereas selling kitchen waste to private parties can make up to 10,000 yuan ($1,500) every year," Zeng Wei, director of the Wuhan Airui Biodiesel Company, told Xinhua News Agency on Saturday. According to Zeng, many restaurants contract out their kitchen waste collection to private parties, a stable set-up in which there is no room for the entrance of an outside party. Refining 1 ton of the waste would produce 130 kg of illegal cooking oil. With its price being half that of ordinary cooking oil, a profit of 1.5 to 2 billion yuan is produced in the entire illegal cooking oil business in the country every year, He said. "The profit margin is almost 200 percent. It's easy to understand why the business is so hot." obo 发布在 每日记事 | 发布时间: 04:05PM Mar 25, 2010 | 评论[2]

Hunger adds to drought's woes
Besides thirst, Yunnan farmer He Zhongcai has to battle another basic need - hunger. After a seemingly endless drought in Xiaowanshan village since August, the daily dish for He's family is a kind of green grass, called Eyangcao - it means last choice for a starving sheep. Even after it is soaked in water for a week, the grass has a strong mouth-puckering taste. On the menu for special days are the few cabbages and asparagus lettuce, stored like treasure in the family's only basket. In He's backyard, wash water keeps several green onions surviving, which might be his only harvest this year. In Jindang village of Muyang town, not far from Xiaowanshan, most residents have not had a bath for more than six months. Xiong Guifen, a 21-year-old carrying her 6-month-old baby girl on her back, was queuing for water, which she said will first be used to wash vegetables, then their faces, dishes and finally, to feed their chickens. Every day, 22 water trucks carry 180 tons of water from towns to villages. A ton of water costs 2.8 yuan (41 US cents) in towns, but transporting it to villages pushes up the cost to 159 yuan, Zhang Yiyong, head of Muyang town, told China Daily on Sunday. 40%。 The severe drought has left more than 93,000 hectares of cropland in the town unproductive, about 30 percent of the total planted area, and also pushed up vegetable prices by 40 percent. According to official figures, the severe drought since last autumn has hit Yunnan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing in the southwest of the country and affected more than 50 million people, leaving about 16 million without adequate drinking water, China News Service reported on Sunday. The direct losses reached more than 19 billion yuan as of March 17 and nearly 1 million hectares of cropland has become unproductive. The drought is forecast to continue in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi until next month. According to the Guizhou government, more than 3 million people in the province are suffering from hunger and thirst. As of March 18, all the 77 counties and cities in Guangxi were affected, and more than 2.2 million people and 1 million head of livestock are suffering from a lack of water. The total central government allocation for drought relief has so far reached 370 million yuan. Premier Wen Jiabao has called for intensified efforts to relieve drought and help the affected people. During a three-day trip to Yunnan province that ended on Sunday, Wen visited Qujing, one of the regions that has suffered the most, to comfort the affected locals and direct relief work. "The priority at the moment is to ensure drinking water for local people at any cost. Not a single person should suffer from a drink water shortage," Wen said. obo 发布在 每日记事 | 发布时间: 03:26PM Mar 23, 2010 | 评论[1] Being young in Taiwan is big
WE want to try a little of everything when we're young. We always think we've got nothing to lose. Then, sometimes, before we know it, we're already on a path where there's no turning back. That's what Monga, the latest film by Taiwanese director Doze Niu, is about. The title refers to one of Taipei's oldest areas. It was quite well-known for its iniquity before a cleanup in the 1990s. The film is bathed in nostalgia for a time (the mid-1980s) when brotherhood, small mafias and the seedy backstreets of the area were poignant "symbols". It tells a story of friendship, conflict and betrayal among a group of five teenage gangsters. It may, more or less, remind us of the Hong Kong classic Teddyboy series, where things like street fights, visits to brothels, and a swearing of brotherhood ceremony are indispensable. But, while Monga has lots of gangsters, it's not a gangster film. It's an honest film about being young, and already something of a box office miracle for a Taiwanese film (40 million yuan, a month after its release). The lead character Mosquito (Mark Chao) "goes astray" and accidentally enters the world of gangsters at a young age. At first he can't understand why people just keep fighting, even killing each other, and why loyalty always comes first, rather than justice or meaning. Another main character, Monk (Ethan Juan,阮经天), is "a fighter with a brain" who betrays his group later. So, the film's doomed to have a sad, bloody ending-also a beautiful one. Right before Mosquito dies in the end, blood in the air becomes fluttering cherry blossoms, which he's always dreamed of seeing. A film like this shows all the subtle emotions and sentiments of a group of gangsters. And, instead of just showing audiences what gangsterdom is like, Monga digs deeper into how meanings of loyalty, friendship and brotherhood shift for the five young gangsters, as they come to see how cruel the world can be. Youth films have become popular in Taiwan in recent years. Some say that Taiwanese films are undergoing a revival lately, with several local productions doing big at the box office, and receiving good reviews. In addition to Monga, there're Cape No 7 , Hear Me , ORZBoyz and Winds of September. Most of them are about young people, especially the latter two. "Stories about youth have always been a favorite of local film makers," Lee Lieh, producer of ORZBoyz and Monga, told Yahoo Taiwan. She said audiences love this type of film because they can identify easily and feel connected to the characters and their stories, many of which appeared earlier in Japanese anime form. "An adapted script and all-star cast will always get teenagers who fantasize about a comic book life to buy tickets," Lee said. "And for today's adults, those film can cause a certain nostalgia because the stories are true to life." In other words, it's the adolescent confusion and the exposure to the real world that make youthful days so special. As a voice-over near the end of Monga has it, "The grass flutters in the same direction as the wind blows. When we're young, we always think that we're the wind. But after we're beaten black and blue, that's when we know we're just the grass." There can come a day when the fearlessness and recklessness of youth fade away, but the memory can live forever. obo

Gun fans cheer Starbucks' policy
Dale Welch recently walked into a Starbucks in Virginia, handgun strapped to his waist, and ordered a banana Frappuccino with a cinnamon bun. He says the firearm drew a double-take from at least one customer, but not a peep from the baristas. Welch's foray into the coffeehouse was part of an effort by some gun owners to exercise and advertise their rights in states that allow people to openly carry firearms. Even in some "open carry" states, businesses are allowed to ban guns in their stores. And some have, creating political confrontations with gun owners. But Starbucks, the largest chain targeted, has refused to take the bait, saying in a statement this month that it follows state and local laws and has its own safety measures in its stores. "Starbucks is a special target because it's from the hippie West Coast, and a lot of dedicated consumers who pay $4 for coffee have expectations that Starbucks would ban guns. And here they aren't," said John Bruce, a political science professor at the University of Mississippi who is an expert in gun policy. Welch, a 71-year-old retired property manager who lives in Richmond, Va., doesn't see any reason why he shouldn't bear arms while he gets caffeinated. "I don't know of anybody who would provide me with defense other than myself, so I routinely as a way of life carry a weapon -- and that extends to my coffee shops," he said. The fight for retailers heated up in early January when gun enthusiasts in northern California began walking into Starbucks and other businesses to test state laws that allow gun owners to carry weapons openly in public places. As it spread to other states, gun control groups quickly complained about the parade of firearms in local stores. Some were spontaneous, with just one or two gun owners walking into a store. Others were organized parades of dozens of gun owners walking into restaurants with their firearms proudly at their sides. In one case, about 100 activists bearing arms had planned to go to a California Pizza Kitchen in Walnut Creek, Calif., but after it became clear they weren't welcome they went to another restaurant. That chain and Peet's Coffee & Tea are among the businesses that have banned customers with guns. Just as shops can deny service to barefoot customers, restaurants and stores in some states can declare their premises gun-free zones. The advocacy group OpenCarry.org, a leading group encouraging the demonstrations, applauded Starbucks in a statement for "deciding not to discriminate against lawful gun carriers." "Starbucks is seen as a responsible corporation and they're seen as a very progressive corporation, and this policy is very much in keeping with that," said John Pierce, co-founder of OpenCarry.org. "If you're going to support individual rights, you have to support them all. I applaud them, and I've gone out of my way personally to let every manager of every Starbucks I pass know that." obo 发布在 每日记事 | 发布时间: 10:50AM Mar 10, 2010 | 评论[0] Brother Sharp's 'homeless chic'
The photograph shows a starkly handsome Chinese man walking with a model's measured gait, and wearing a rag-tag but well co-ordinated overcoat on top of a leather jacket. His eyes peer into the middle distance, in what one fan described as "a deep and penetrating way", and he strides confidently forward. But this is no catwalk model. This is a homeless man in the city of Ningbo. And now a band of web followers are calling him the coolest man in China. His good looks and bohemian dress sense have won him thousands of online fans after a resident of Ningbo posted a picture online. Web users in China have called him the "Beggar Prince", the "Handsome Vagabond", and, most often, "Brother Sharp". He is 5ft 8in, around 35 years old, and always has a cigarette between his fingers. He also appears to have a fondness for women's clothes, which has only served to fuel his status as a fashion icon. His good looks are reminiscent of popular Asian actors like Takeshi Kaneshiro or the Oscar- nominated Ken Watanabe. One particularly striking picture juxtaposes Brother Sharp's with a model showing the latest Dolce & Gabbana collection. "Look at him wrinkle his brow... nothing needs to be said... sexy...", ran one comment on the Tianya site. Another wrote: "He doesn't really look like a beggar, more like a vagabond. The quality of this person's tops are all not bad, a down jacket, cotton jacket, even a leather jacket inside, and though they're a bit dirty, they're all in good condition, not the kind that beggars find from the trash." The suggestion that homelessness can be cool chimes with a fashion trend that many have considered tasteless: in January, the designer Vivienne Westwood presented a "homeless chic" show in which models were styled to look like rough sleepers, a move prefigured by Ben Stiller's satirical film Zoolander, which featured a similar show called Derelicte. But anyone with similar designs on Brother Sharp's sartorial tips is out of luck. His identity remains a secret, and social workers in Ningbo say they want to keep it that way. "Homeless people are vulnerable. It is incorrect to use them for entertainment purposes," said one worker at a homeless centre in Ningbo. Brother Sharp is said to appear mentally disturbed when approached on the street. obo

Finding a future in a factory
Time to get back to work, right? Well, not everyone is. Which brings us to our next major topic: The labor shortage. You’ve no doubt seen the headlines. Companies in the Pearl River Delta area have been facing a major labor shortage since the Spring Festival. Industries have been hit hard there. Guangzhou alone has an estimated 150,000 vacancies – compared with practically zero last year. At the same time, we see an endless number of reports about what a hard time college grads are having finding a job. And how starting salaries have been dropping, in many cases to around 2,000 yuan a month. What we have is a labor shortage and gloomy job prospects existing side-by-side, so some people are asking: What would happen if college grads were to lower their expectations and take a factory job? 21st Century has spoken with college grads who headed down this path and has found some mixed feelings. He's not bragging, but at least he has a job. It’s not like any of those interesting jobs his friends have and there’s not much to brag about it, but Su Huolian’s pleased with his first job. The 22-year-old Su graduated from Guilin University of Electronic Technology, in automation, last July. After a long, hard job search, the only offers he was getting were on assembly lines. After several sleepless nights, he decided to take a factory job. “I’m an adult and need to feed myself, and pay off my student loans,” he explained. He chose an electronic company in Guilin. While a factory job might not be great, he said, it was no sweatshop. Any company using the latest technology might give him a place to move up from. He became an adjustor on the production line. He had to repeat the same dumb move over and over, a thousand times a day, with his mind a complete blank. His co-workers were all from a lower background. But he found he was at ease chatting with them and they were more than happy to share useful tips with him on how to work better. After work, however, he’s alone in his room, thinking about the future. His salary of 1,500 yuan, along with insurance, helps him survive in the medium-sized city. But it’s not enough to support a family. And, “what if I’m not as healthy then as now,” he asks himself. Su feels sad when he hears about his classmates on the career path in some big corporation. But he reminds himself to be optimistic and think positively: “Even if I can only see a few steps out ahead of me, I need to focus on taking those steps straight and steady.” obo

There's still time to look
Rising temperatures and drizzle may have pointed the way to a new spring and a new future, but the job status of many students is still uncertain. Still, they might want to take heart, because March is often called the “silver” job-hunting season. At this time of the year, anyone who hasn't found that ideal employer is usually toeing the line, ready to make the final dash. Feng Wenjiang, a 22-year-old senior at Henan University's college of agriculture, for example, is trying his level best. He's going all out to fix his resume and upgrading his English interview skills during winter break. He hopes to work in marketing in a large listed company. “I've missed out on lots of chances,” Feng said. “As graduation draws near, I really need to speed things up in getting a solid deal before I leave campus.” One Jiefang Daily report, quoting “reliable sources”, said that, by the end of February, student employment in the Yangtze River Delta region in both Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces is at nearly the same level as last year: around 20 percent. And it's about 27 percent in Shanghai. But there's enough reason to be positive: new job opportunities are coming. “After companies complete plans or a budget for the new financial year, they'll post new openings,” said Chen Yang, of Beijing's Zhongtong Wisdom Consultancy company. “So, unexpected chances or pleasant surprises could pop up at any time. It's helpful for job hunters to keep a sharp eye out for this.” In this sense, looking for a job in March could turn out to be even a “blessing” because, sometimes, the best things come at the last. Also, student job candidates have a chance to mature in their interviewing techniques by building on the experience they've accumulated over the past few months. If they're wise, they can put this to use, and appear smarter. Chen has some suggestions on how to keep up with job postings. First, make good use of the university's job BBS and career center. Many colleges offer job services and online aid at “all hours”. Also, you can take part in job fairs. Many large fairs are scheduled for March. A routine search of popular job sites just might turn up new discoveries. “The rule is to not let one small ray of hope go,” Chen said. What's most important, however, for this season, is to stay cool and be level-headed. The first thing to avoid is “low-bidder psychology”. That's where students might get so desperate to get a contract before graduation that they're willing to sacrifice their real interests or abilities. Ji Yantao, 22, a senior in law at North China University of Technology, says that he won't give in to pressures to close a job deal, no matter what. Not until he's basically satisfied in every way. In fact, he's got an offer from an international non-governmental organization but is in no hurry to take it, even though he values the nature of their work. Ji thinks the 2,000-yuan salary might not allow him to survive in the capital. “Signing a contract is easy, but it would mean trouble later on if I regretted the decision,” he explained. obo [0] Cellphones: is there a cancer link?
Could your cellphone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, powerlines and wi-fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors. For example, Camilla Rees, 48, a former investment banker in the US, moved out of her apartment in San Francisco because of the radiation coming from next door. Rees told the Los Angeles Times that when her neighbors moved in and installed a wi-fi router she lost her ability to think clearly. “I would wake up dizzy in the morning. I'd collapse to the floor. I had to leave to escape that nightmare,” she said. Since then, she's been on a crusade against low-level electromagnetic fields, or EMFs. And she's not alone. Millions of people say they suffer from headaches, depression, nausea and rashes when they're too close to cellphones or other sources of EMFs. Although the World Health Organization has officially declared that EMFs seem to pose little threat, governments are still concerned. In fact, last April, the European Parliament called for countries to take steps to reduce exposure to EMFs. The city of San Francisco and the state of Maine are currently considering requiring cancer-warning labels on cellphones. If these fears are justified, then perhaps we should all be worried about the amount of time we spend talking on our phones or plugging into wi-fi hotpots. 90%。 Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the University at Albany, in New York, thinks there's a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia. Also there's a greater than 90 percent chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors. But others believe these concerns are unjustified paranoia. Dr Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don't support warning labels for cellphones,” said Linet. “We don't have the evidence that there's much danger.” Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs and illness–so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It's funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group. The final report should come out later this year, but data so far don't suggest a strong link between cellphone use and cancer risk. According to Robert Park, a professor emeritus of physics at the University of Maryland in the US, the magnetic waves aren't nearly powerful enough to break apart DNA, which is how known threats, such as UV rays and X-rays, cause cancer. Perhaps it's just psychological. Some experts find that the electro-sensitivity syndrome seems to be similar to chemical sensitivity syndrome, which is a condition that's considered to be psychological. Psychological or not, Rees suffers physically and has her own defense strategy. She shuns cellphones and spends as much time as she can in low-EMF areas. “I like to spend time in the mountains and by the sea,” she said. Whether EMFs are harmful or not, a break in the countryside, without the cellphone, would probably be good for all of us. obo
