She was delighted with herself when she had no trouble finding the indistinct road leading to the town. She drove slowly down its rutted pavement, savoring the scenery and also mindful of her car’s shocks.

It really could not have had much more than a population of five hundred people and that was really pushing it. She wondered what had totally caused the town’s demise.

The forlorn emptiness of Peri made it picturesque in a strange way but it also felt saddening because it seemed to be waiting for the people to come back and the wait could go on forever. She snapped several shots of different buildings from different angles. She completely depleted one roll of film and began the process of loading another when she heard a vehicle turn onto the street where she was and come towards her. Sudden thoughts of being accused of trespassing went through her head until she recognized the vehicle as Lane Callaway’s SUV. It came to a stop about fifty feet from her and its driver stepped out onto the weed-encrusted street. She turned to face him and got her first good look at Lane in the bright daylight.

Smiling tentatively at him, she said. “Good afternoon, Deputy.”
Lane touched the brim of his black baseball cap and answered “Afternoon, Ms. Winslow.” Then frowning slightly, he ask. “Are you stranded again?”
