The miles rolled by and the time stretched as she finally faced the fact that she was hopelessly lost and nearly out of gas. As the needle met evenly with the empty mark on the gas gauge, she knew she had come too far to return to the main highway. She had to find someway to get some gas. She felt a feeling akin to desperation until she saw the small weather beaten sign stating that Peri lay ahead in four miles. Saying a silent prayer that the gas would hold, she sped up.
There was only a cluster of buildings, enough to really even proclaim Peri a town, actually more of a village. She passed a closed grocery store first with weeds growing the parking lot. It did not look encouraging but she still hung onto a little hope but when, building after building she passed proved to be boarded up, she was near panic. She made it as far as the one gas station that was as abandoned as the rest of the buildings and the car coughed, sputtered and then the engine died and moved by momentum of speed attained before, it rolled a few more feet and then came to a complete stop. She was stranded but she refused to give into any of the panic rushing at her.
She turned off the ignition key and glanced around her for any way to identify exactly where she was. She retrieved her cell phone from her purse and punched in the number on her auto club card. The phone seemed silent for a moment but then she heard a faint ring. Someone answered and she was relieved to be talking to another human being. She explained what had happened, where she was and what she needed. She waited expectantly for good news but it was not with coming. The operator informed her that there was no one who could help her for at least a hundred miles and it would be several hours before someone would be there. She glanced at her watch, seeing with dismay that it was past three in the afternoon and if the dispatcher was correct about the time length, she would be alone after dark.
The thought chilled her.
Noticing that her signal was weak, she once again ask the dispatcher to send someone as soon as possible and then pushed the “end” button. With the air conditioning off in the car, it soon began to grow uncomfortably hot. She turned the ignition key on and used the power window button to open both front side windows to relief the stuffiness. Out of gas was one thing but a dead battery could only complicate the situation. She had to conserve what she had.
