Lane Callaway smiled suddenly as he teased. “Can you say anything besides ‘yes’, Ms.

Winslow?”

Marla grinned as she answered “Yes.”
玛丽咧嘴一笑，又一个“是的”。

Giving his shoulders a slight shrug, he straightened up to his full height.

他耸了耸肩，身体一伸，毕挺地站着。

“Get your things, ma’am, and come with me. If it would make you feel better, dial 911 again and tell dispatch I am here so they can confirm that I am who I say I am.” he suggested.

“小姐，拿东西吧，跟上我。打个电话给911吧，这样你的心里会踏实些。告诉调度员，说我来到这里了，以便他们可以确认我正是我所说的那个我。”他提建议说。

Marla gave him a slight apologetic smile but did as he suggested. The police dispatcher confirmed that the man was a county deputy and safe to leave with. Reassured, she gathered her things, rolled up the car's window, and reminded herself to tell the auto club driver where the spare key was. For once, she was glad she had not installed the car alarm or else she would have had to stay with the car or come back.

A few minutes later, she found herself, cool and dry, inside Deputy Callaway’s SUV and headed to safety.

Lane Callaway lived in what had once been a large farmhouse with an approximate distance of five miles from Peri. As he drove through another back road, fighting the strong rain gusts, Marla relaxed as much as she possibly could. She had contacted the auto club about the car and given Lane’s address to the operator. She was informed that her car should be at that location and ready to go as early as possible.

When they finally reached the farmhouse, the rain had steadily increased with powerful gusts of wind. Both people worried about the possibility of tornados. She was grateful to finally have what looked like sturdy shelter.
