莱恩将SUV小车停到车库，两人怕被雨淋得更湿，飞也似地冲到屋里。家里仍然有电，看来是个欢迎的好兆头。

They left Lane’s sodden slicker on the screened back porch, and he invited Marla into a huge wonderful old country kitchen. She stared around herself with pleasure at exposed ceiling beams, gleaming copper brass pots, an oak island, a built-in oven and microwave with surface stove top. It was almost right out of the pages of House and Garden magazine. She let out an audible “ooh” and Lane smiled with pride.

他们把莱恩的湿雨衣放在纱窗封闭过道后，他邀请玛丽进了那个美观的，宽敞的旧式乡村厨房。她兴致勃勃地环顾四周，看着那些全暴露的天花板横梁，若隐若现的黄铜锅，一个橡木灶台，一个卡式炉和一个平面炉顶式微波炉。这个厨房简直就是从“住房和花园杂志”中复制出来。她情不自禁地叫了一声“嚯”，莱恩得意地笑了。

“This is a great kitchen!” she stated enthusiastically!

“这个厨房真了不起!”她热情洋溢地说。

“Thanks. I was raised in this house and my mom had it done this way. She always said that she loved plenty of space and convenience.” Lane replied.

“谢谢。我就在这座房子里长大，我妈把这个厨房装修成这个样。她过去说，她喜欢有足够的空间和方便的炊具。”莱恩回答说。

“Said? She’s not with you anymore?” Marla probed without trying to be offensive.

“‘过去说’？她现在不跟你一起住？”玛丽追问，并非有意引起不愉快。

“No, both of my parents passed away about four years ago. Now, there is no body here but me.” Lane explained.

“不一起生活。大约4年前父母先后去世。现在，只有我一个人在这里。”莱恩这样解释。

Not quite sure what to say, Marla opted for nothing.

玛丽一时不知道如何是好，半响出不出话。

“Would you like some coffee, Ms. Winslow?” he ask, and Marla thought that she had never heard a better suggestion.

“你要喝点咖啡吗，温斯洛小姐？”莱恩的邀请。这对玛丽来说是最好不过了。

“That would be wonderful.”

“太好了。”

She stared down at the dripping puddle she was making on his kitchen floor, realized that she probably was a real mess, and longed for not only the coffee but a big fluffy towel and some dry clothes. As if reading her thoughts, he spoke again.
