Giving him a grateful smile, she did as she was instructed and set off to find the bathroom. He watched her go for a moment, then frowned just as he turned to climb the staircase to his own bedroom and separate bath.

Two hours later, Marla just finishing up the meal that Lane had prepared for them. Darkness had finally settled on the day but it had brought no lessening in the rain. The television weather reports kept giving warnings of possible flash floods, causing Marla to worry about her car. Lane gave her some reassurance by saying that the ground where Peri was located was some of the highest ground around. An hour before, Marla’s cell phone had rung. When she answered it, it was the auto club. The woman on the other end offered her apologies but explained that due to the weather and abundance of car emergencies that they would not be able to get to her car before sometime the next day. Marla knew it was because the auto club knew she was safe at the moment and so her needs had been dropped down on the priorities list. Customers, who were totally stranded, were the first on the list to be assisted.

As she had eaten, she mulled over the prospect that she was going to have to spend the night in a stranger’s house. Police officer or not, Lane Callaway was still a stranger to her. She was grateful for the shelter and the safety but not really happy with the situation. She became even more unhappy when Lane’s own cell phone rang and it was his job requesting for him to come in. The county was having several problems due to the weather and they needed him. He told them he would report for work by nine pm. He wanted to make sure that Marla was settled and as comfortable as possible.

After dinner was finished, she helped him clean up and then followed him dutifully as he showed her where she could find candles, a battery operated radio and flashlight, blankets and whatever else she might need or want, depending on the possibility that the house could be without power for awhile. Once satisfied that she would be alright, he returned to his upstairs bedroom and readied himself for work. As he was leaving, he left one last bit of advice by instructing her to turn off her cell phone to save the battery and use the house phone instead as it seldom went out, despite weather such as was happening. With those words, he bid her goodnight and left for work. She was alone in a stranger’s house.

She watched television until she grew bored but still not sleepy, she returned to some
