"Sorta of. I brought some fruit along.” she answered.

“That is not a lot to eat. How about coming to my house for something to eat. You can follow me with your car. I don’t often have company way out here and it would be nice to have someone to eat with.” he invited.
“那是吃不饱的。到我家里去吃吧。你开车跟我的车走好了。我没有同伴。我喜欢有人和我一起吃饭。”他邀请了。
Marla hesitated for a moment but soon pushed away what little unease she had about the idea. She smiled cheerfully at him as she accepted. “That would be nice, Lane. Thank you for inviting

Lane walked her back to her car and while she turned her car around to follow him, he went back to his SUV. She soon found herself following his vehicle through unknown area until they arrived at the quietly-white farmhouse, surrounded by some very old maple and pear trees. They parked at the back of the long driveway and entered the house through the same back door into the kitchen as before. Once again, Marla marveled at how clean the room was and homey and welcoming it felt.

She seated herself on one of the stools at the island in the middle of the kitchen after offering to help but accepting that he declined her offer. He set about preparing some grill cheese sandwiches and a chilled salad, accompanied by amber tumblers of fresh sweetened ice tea. They carried on a light conversation while they ate and the more time that Marla spent with him, the more she realized how much she liked him. He was handsome in a quiet way with a gentle laid-back personality that made it very easy to spend time in his company.

She did not know how they did it but she soon found that they were on the subject of their personal relationships and she was telling him about her ex-boyfriend that she had not seen in a year and a half.

When he showed surprise at the fact that she did not date much, she laughed and stated that she had a demanding job that kept her quite busy. He nodded without saying anything except to acknowledge that his own job was the same way. When he told her of his ex-wife and the divorce, she expressed sympathy. The loss of a marriage carried a graver impact than just a relationship like hers.

The afternoon had passed quickly into a long summer evening twilight when she told him that she needed to head back to the city before it became too late. He agreed and informed her that he would lead her back to the main highway so she would have no chance of getting lost in unfamiliar countryside.
整个下午悄悄逝去。夏天长夜的朦胧降临的时候，她说要在回城里，不能太晚动身。他同意了，并表态给她领路，送她到大马路，以免她在这陌生的乡村迷路。
Just before she went to get in her car, he asked her if she would be agreeable if he drove into the city next weekend and take her to dinner and a movie. His request for a date did not really surprise her as she suspected he liked her as much as she did him but she acted very delighted as she accepted and the date was set.
